I’m an Alcoholic
I started my drinking
career at age 16, when I was a freshman in high school, and I didn’t go on the
wagon for the next 64 years. All those years I had absolutely no idea I was an alcoholic.
None. In fact I thought drinking was good for me, very good and I’ll tell you
why.
My dad died of a
heart attack when he was 43. Of his 5 brothers 4 of them died before they were
55. One bother lived to be 87 years old, the black sheep. He drank and smoked
all his life. Simple solution I deduced: Alcohol
thins blood no heart attack.
Fast forward 64
years and my daughter psychoanalysis who lives in Valdez AK., explained I could
do the same thing with a daily 15 mg baby aspirin. Daw da. Since that day I seldom have a drink, because
my liver is shot, and more than a glass of wine causes my body and mind to go
bipolar.
The results: Since
I quit drinking one big change is I don’t blame other people for my problems. I
hear the delicate sound of autumn leaves rattling in the breeze, feel the touch
of snowflakes on my face, and see the new spouts of grasses in the spring time.
I became a writer with a precious sense of discovering who I am and what I can become.
