I went to Russia in 1978
My mom and
step-dad invited me to go with them to Russia.
My step-dad
was on the board of Regents at Utah State University. Seventy people signed up
for the tour. Stalin had died and the new chairman Nikita Khrushchev allowed
Americans. We were the first Tour group of Americans.
We met at
the S.L.C. International Airport, flew to NY, Amsterdam and finally Helsinki,
Finland. A train took us to Moscow where we stayed a week. We visited Red
Square, watched The changing of the Guard in Red Square looked at a beautiful
church in a state of restoration. We also shopped throughout the “Gum”
Department store; the world’s largest at that time. It was about 3 square blocks
on one level. Also, the underground train with its tiled walls was clean and beautiful.
After a week
in Moscow we flew to Leningrad for five days. We visited the fantastic Saint
Petersburg Palace one day. On another day we were bused to the former Peter the
Great’s Czars summer palaces.
Then a plane
to Finland and home.
