I WAS NINETEEN WHEN I LEARNED TO PLAY THE DRUMS

True Story

I WAS NINETEEN WHEN I LEARNED TO PLAY THE DRUMS

When I was in my late teens, nineteen years old to be exact, I flunked out of accounting college due to low grades, my second year, and decided to change into another field where I could be happier City. The man on the drums was playing Bolero. It sounded wonderful. I decided then and there I wanted to learn to do that. I asked him if he would teach me how to play the drums. He said yes and so took lessons from him that he called the “fixed pressure, technique.” for six months.

I practiced in the wash room at 1087 Denver Street in Salt Lake City, day and night until my little wrists often swelled up as big as an orange. When I was half finished with the drum course my teacher finished his contract with the Utah Symphony and started playing in a band in Fresno California. I decided to be one of the ten most famous drummers in the USA, so I went to Fresno California in an empty vegetable delivery truck…just kidding. I took a Greyhound bus.

My teachers name was Mike Portnoy a single man, who used to play in Skinny Henderson’s Band, and was close friends with the famous drummer Buddy Rich. Mike had a contract with the Hacienda Motel to play for one year six nights a week. The Hacienda Motel was the world’s largest Motel at that particular time 1954.

Six months later after finishing the course, I decided drumming wasn’t a life style I wanted to live so I hitched hiked back to Utah. The longest ride I got was in the back seat of a Greyhound bus. I snuck on the bus in Wendover, Utah and hid behind the last seat, until the bus stopped in SLC.

(For my frequent blog readers--- I like the human’s transportation system, with the Squash system you never know where you’re going l going to end up;)
