My Best Friend short story

                                                               Natalie

My daughter, Natalie, was born in 1976, a centenial baby, on July 15 shortly before a server rain storm.  She is a Psychologist with a Master’s degree from Pacific University, located in Forest Grove, Oregon. She has taught me most of what I know about psychology. She attended Weber State University for two years, receiving a BS degree in marketing. She then transferred to the University of Utah for her undergraduate work in psychology. After two years at U of U, she was accepted at  Pacific University in Forest Grove where she earned her B.S. While she was going to school in her spare time she bought two homes at 9705 Lancaster Road, in downtown Portland. She remodeled them while she lived in one, and I helped with the remodeling and lived in the other. The houses were ajoined with a redwood patio that had a giant redwood in the middle that was over 2000 years old.  Also, while she was in school and after graduation, she worked at Providence Hospital (I.S.P.) in Portland.
She listens well, is intelligent and persistent.

I noticed how well Natalie was liked by her patients when she was attending the University Of Utah. Part of the curriculum was to work in a day-care center for young people with disabilities. When she would arrive at work, the patients would be waiting outside the building to say, “Good morning Natalie.” On most of the days that she was assigned to the day care center, the patients would get to go to an event. There were two mini-vans and Natalie would be the driver of one of them. On one particular day, I gave her a ride to the care center. The event was a hockey game at the Salt Palace. All the patients ran for the van that she was driving, filling it up with about sixteen people. The ones that didn’t make it in time to get on her bus had to get on the 2nd bus.
Natalie is  goal oriented, and self motivated.  As an example when her junior year of high school ended she had all her credits required for graduation. At Weber State University, she earned 36 credit hours, while maintaining a 4.4 GPA.
Another example is, in her three years at Ogden High she participated in Varsity sports, such as volleyball, softball, and the swim team, and the drill team. She was one out of the dozens of the try outs, who was picked to be on the drill team in her freshman year. It was the year the Ogden High School's drill team, the Tigerettes, rose from worst finish, dead lasts, to number one in 4-A region. The 20-member Tigeretts, next clinched first place in 3-A Region 11 and continued on winning state.
That same year, Natalie was in the ninth grade  Mount Ogden Junior High School. Coach Halbert said, “It was my goal to win. I chose Natalie Wallace to be my drill team president and the assistant advisor to the team."  Natalie now 32 years old, remembers the 1998-99 year well. At the end of the 1999 school year that the Tigerettes came back from last place to first. We girls gave it our all. All the other girls were juniors and seniors varsity. As a freshman, I had no idea of the hard work that was ahead for me and the team.
In other activities she was chosen for leadership positions such as captain of the volleyball team, and softball MVP. She was also in the German club and chosen to be the peer leader. Academically, she took challenging classes and graduated with a 4.8 GPA.
Her favorite hobby and sport is snowboarding. She taught snowboarding classes for three years at Powder Mountain when she was attending Ogden High. One fine day when on the way up to Power Mountain I got a bright idea. I parked the car at the lower lift and asked Natalie to go in and apply for a job teaching snowboarding. She went in and got the job that day. From then on, for three seasons, I got to go free on her teaching days. However, I didn’t participate with her and her class whenever she was asked to teach advanced snowboarding.
When she applied to major in Marketing at Weber she wrote, she had a job with K-Construction Co. in the summers for 8-years; she stated she learned to run the business, from bookkeeping, and ordering parts, to handling the tenant’s problems. One of the summers she was put in charge of painting the buildings for a co-op called Grandview Acres in Ogden. The project was partially funded by Crittenden Glass Co. There was a manager, and a maintenance man by the name of Lenard. Natalie’s job description was to paint all of the 52 units by the end of summer. She was given a middle aged man for a helper and was told to turn in her hours and the helpers every week or two to the manager Norman. He would thus write a check to K-Construction as per agreement for ten times the hours. Forty hours for example would be $400.00.
This brings me to my great interest in business. I plan to succeed in the business field. I’ve already shown I can do well in school, and with my determination, I know I will rise to the top in the business world.

Took first place trophy when 5 years old at piano recital Ogden City Library Contest… but they made her give it back...(just kidding.) 7th Grade she was the fastest runner for boys and girls, additionally she had the highest grade point average in the school.
Ogden High Freshman baseball team she received the honor for State best player by her coach and the State News Media. Also won honoree best designated batter in Utah.

Received her B.S. Marketing Degree from University of Utah in 1996. Portland Oregon she graduated with a Master’s degree Pacific University Top student in her class.

Yesterday Natalie found that a trip to Italy now that the Euro is down, is a very good deal. She booked a two week vacation for next month. Her mom Joelene , and Rick Propst will tour in and about three cities Rome, Venus, and Palmira.
